Our Mission,
The purpose of the Rufus F. Hardin Museum is to preserve Brownwood's African American history of the community through preservation and restoration of the Rufus F. Hardin School, collecting and exhibiting historical artifacts, memorabilia, presentation of educational programs and other activities significant to the history of African Americans in Brown County, including relationships to Texas history and American history.
Hardin alumni and interested community members came together in the Spring of 1998 to form the Rufus F. Hardin Museum, Inc. The former segregated school house has also been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Hardin alumni,1944 to 1955, Marrion Barron, explains to a neighborhood youth about when she attended school at Hardin and the museum's mission.
